Trying A Self Tan Product During Pregnancy

By Haywood Hunter

Self tanning is the process of using chemicals, sprays, lotions, gels and other self tan product on the skin surface that help to give an effect similar to that of natural tanning. Self tanning aims at avoiding the use of UV rays from the sun which if in contact with the skin for extended periods can cause skin damage, dehydration and in worst cases, skin cancer. Self tan product choice is an important part of using these elements on one's skin so as to attain the best results possible with minimal side effects.

For expectant women, there is the need to still feel beautiful and self tan product is a quick escape. With many available options in the market, it is important to consider the safety of both the mother as a direct user and the developing fetus.

Dermatologists have proven that the use of self tan product is harmless during pregnancy as they are basically dyes on the skin surface. Of all the products available today, tanning beds have had considerable discussions as they work the same way as the sun, emitting similar UV rays with the same effects of long durations of exposure.

It has not been shown that they will harm an unborn baby, but they could have a harmful effect on the mother. The beds, however, if used often enough, could lead to health difficulties. The complications could also result in problems with the mother's placenta, which would in turn, negatively effect an unborn baby. A safer option is a self tan product.

Use a self tan product, considering the increased temperatures experienced when using a tanning bed. The tanning bed may be hazardous to the baby especially in the early stages. This is the same case as using a sauna, or hot tub during pregnancy. Lying on the back for long durations is also another point to note. This position restricts blood flow to the heart and the baby as well.

Self tan product use has still been considered a safer way for pregnant women to get a skin glow if one chooses to use sprays and self tanning lotions. These are considered safe for use on the skin and since they do not protect against UV rays, sun screen can also be use hand in hand with such products. Sprays and lotions only stain the skin and cannot be absorbed into the body and can therefore be washed away after they serve their purpose.

During the start of pregnancy it may be recommended that you rather avoid using any self tan product. Although they are not particularly harmful, they do contain the ingredient dihydroxyacetone, or DHA. Rather stay very cautious during the most important time of your baby's development.

Credited to heightened hormonal activity within a woman's system, the smell produced by such self tan product can be overwhelming and those pregnant tend to stay away from using them. Also, hyper-sensitivity can lead to skin irritation when these products are used. A pregnant woman should use the self tan product on a discreet location of the skin a day before using it over her body.
