Patient handouts are a very important tool in patient management. They are especially important in educating your patients about their diseases and medical conditions. As a result, the time required for consultation is markedly reduced. Apart from the educating the clients, handouts are also important for advertisement. They can be used to inform your clients about the range of services that are available at your facility.

There are a number of important things you need to know as you plan to start using these tools in your facility. Perhaps the most important of them is that you must have an objective that you wish to meet; you need to know what it is that you want to pass across to your clients. Do you want to educate patients on the management of their conditions or do you want to inform them about your services. This question must be answered in the planning stage.

To successfully implement the program, it is mandatory that you understand some important characteristics about your clients. Conducting research will help you to identify the main concerns of your clients as regards the quality of service provided by your facility, their main medical problems, their average age, literacy levels and so on. You can do this by use of interviews or questionnaires.

The next thing that should be done is to determine the type of design that will be adopted. There is no doubt that cost will play a major role in determining what you will have for the design. Ensure that you have enough money to take care of the entire project. Take some time to visit several designers to determine which of them provides the best quality at the most favorable price. Other things that have to be factored in the design include the type of paper, writing style and the theme.

Content should be chosen very carefully. Do not make your material too bulky as clients may lose interest while reading or they may not read it altogether. At the same time, do not be too sketchy. If you are advising, your patients on how to deal with a disease, for example, ensure that you address all the main points. The content should be organized into topics, subtopics and brief explanations.

The language to be used should be guided by your research findings. Keep everything as simple as possible so that the message can be understood even by the person with basic level education. Long complex sentences tend to lose the intended message and should be avoided at all costs. Instead, one should use short concise sentences. In the event that technical terms are included, they should be accompanied by explanations.

A few samples should be taken for testing. This is done by distributing them randomly among some clients and collecting the feedback. The healthcare provider then collects feedback regarding the suitability of the handouts and uses it to make improvements.

Patient handouts are a very convenient way of communicating with clients in a hospital setting. They are not only cheap but have also been shown to reduce consultation times in many centers. This is because they help educate the client easing the burden on the physician.
