The Facts About Myofascial Release Massage

By Marissa Velazquez

Myofascial release massage is classified as a soft-tissue therapy. The procedure is often carried out as treatment for immobility and pain associated with the skeletal muscle. This is meant to relax all of the contracted muscles, improve blood and lymphatic circulation, and stimulate stretch reflex of various muscles. Andrew Taylor Still, known as the father of osteopathic medicine, along with his earliest students, are credited with initially identifying this method.

The soft tissue component located inside the connective tissue is known as fascia. It is known for providing both support and protection for numerous structures in the body, including muscle. Osteopathic theory states that said component can become restricted. There are many reasons that may be to blame for this: infectious agents, inactivity, trauma, psychogenic disease, or overuse. The result of this restriction is pain, muscle tension and diminished flow of blood.

Fascia, along with its muscles, are the primary targets for this therapy. Nonetheless, other tissues can be addressed in the process. Techniques applied through this may be considered passive or active. With active, the patient is instructed to use resistance but when it comes to passive, they are expected to stay completely relaxed.

This release may also be indirect or direct. Deep tissue manipulation is involved with the direct technique. The tissue is constantly engaged by force until the release has been started. People who give this treatment will use various tools, as well as their knuckles or elbows, as a way to slowly stretch the restricted fascia. This is designed to bring about changes in the structure through stretching or elongating certain tissues or the fascia. Practitioners are trained to make movements slowly through the layers of tissue until they have reached the deepest tissue.

In terms of the indirect technique, gentle stretched are used and only a little pressure so that the fascia can unwind itself. Tissue that is deemed dysfunctional is moved toward the path of least resistance until complete free movement is allowed. This approach originated in the osteopathy schools and is quite popular in physiotherapy.

Remember that practitioners will differ. They will have their own techniques, style, experience and knowledge. Furthermore, results of this procedure will differ based on many factors. It is still recommended that people put time and effort into researching the process, as well as the practitioner, before having it done.

The cost of this massage will vary. There are some insurance companies that will cover a portion of the bill, but not all will do this. Covering the bill out of pocket can be very expensive but to some this is a worthy investment. The practice has become more popular in recent years, especially amongst massage and medical groups. Benefits that are frequently touted by supporters include loosening of tight muscles and tissues, improvement of mood and overall pain management.

Myofascial release massage is the name assigned to a soft-tissue therapy that has many perceived benefits. This is very popular in the modern day, in many areas of the world. How effective and costly the procedure is will range. People interested in having it done should do research ahead of time.
