4 Important Take Aways From Your Dental Visit

By Rey Vetangelo

Teeth are pretty sturdy little things. But as strong as they are, they can still be quite damageable. Even if you brush and floss every day, there are lots of great ways to injure your teeth. Here are a few of the ways.

Unfortunately, our world is filled with accident prone people. People trip, stumble, crash, misjudge distances, and so on. We've all had our moments. Once, I misjudged the distance of a mug and chipped my tooth on its rim as I swooped down to slurp off the excess hot coca that would have spilled over had I picked the mug up. I've had friends who didn't pay attention to where they were walking, making them crash into walls and break their teeth.

Gently push the floss through the gap and avoid touching the gums. Third, gently move the floss under the gum line and floss up and down from there. Your goal is to clean the tooth, not cut into the gums. Don't push deeply into the gums. That said, if your gums start bleeding as you start to get back into flossing, that's normal. Your gums will get stronger as time goes on.

Playing sports is another great way to injure your teeth. Not only are professional athletes at risk, but perhaps more so are young energetic kids playing football on Thanksgiving morning who don't wear mouth guards.

Kids in the playground get basketballs in the mouth, run into goal posts, get knocked down face first, and elbowed in the mouth. If the kids are young enough and only lose/damage baby teeth, it's not such a big deal. But seriously damaged, fractured, or knocked out permanent teeth may necessitate oral surgery. They may need fillings, crowns, implants, and even root canals. Yikes. Kids, play safe!

Some people also put their teeth through the ringer. They use their teeth to rip open bags, pop off bottle caps, carry bags, crush ice, and snarl at enemies. Your teeth are pretty incredible, but they do have their limits.

Over time, activities like these will wear down your teeth. Eventually, one bottle cap too many can break your teeth. So act like a human and try to use the great inventions we have to do these jobs for you. Your teeth are for eating and smiling. Let them do what they were made to do, and limit all other activities.

There are only a few things you can really do to keep your teeth safe. First, stick to basic oral health. Make sure you brush, floss, and fluoride to keep your teeth naturally strong. When you play sports, use a mouth guard. When you walk, pay attention to where you are going. Refrain from acting like a wild animal and don't carry things or rip things apart with your teeth.

Floss every day and make sure you're doing it right. Your teeth will thank you throughout the years to come, even if you had to spend several tired evenings forcing yourself to brush and floss.
