By Hubert Gollin

Even though the situation of our economy isn't getting any better, the demand for healthcare workers such as pharmacy technicians continue to grow. Pharmacy technician jobs are opening up not just from pharmaceutical firms, but also in nursing homes and assisted-living facilities. And while there are plenty of opportunities waiting for you, getting sufficient training and certification is your first priority.

While it is possible to work as a pharmacy technician without going through a formal training program, you might find it hard to get your hands on the best employment opportunities if you didn't have one. There are plenty of training opportunities offered in institutions such as vocational schools and community colleges, both of which can provide 6 to 24 months of training.

Besides formal education, another way you can improve your chances of getting hired for the most prestigious pharmacy technician jobs is by acquiring certification and getting other credentials. You can seek certification from the Institute for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ICPT) or the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) by successfully completing the certification exams they administer.

If you want to be qualified for pharmacy technician jobs, you will also need to have great interpersonal and communication skills. This is because most of your time will be spent working with other healthcare workers and talking to patients. Your analytical and mathematical skills must also be sharp, especially when it comes to preparing prescription orders and medications.

When looking for pharmacy technician jobs, don't just focus on pharmaceutical firms - you can also find many job openings in hospitals, especially since most of them have their own pharmacy department. There will also be job postings all over the internet, and it is recommended that you browse through online job directories and have your resume posted there to be evaluated.

Your local newspaper is also among the best places to find great pharmacy technician jobs. If you really want to apply in a pharmaceutical setting, you can always visit the company website and check their job postings. Should you find a job opening in a particular company, make sure you prepare not just your resume but also yourself for the scheduled interview should you go that far.
