Introducing The Medfusion 3500 Syringe Pump

By Kevin Williams

The Medfusion 3500 Syringe Pump is a small infusion pump that is used to slowly deliver a small amount of fluid over a specified period of time. Infusion pumps are used clinically and in the research setting. These devices may be programmed to administer tenths of milliliters every minute, patient-controlled analgesia and fluids whose volumes differ with the times of day.

Automating drug delivery means that nurses have more time to take care of patients and saves the hospital money which can also be diverted for other patient-centered activities. One area in which infusion pumps earn their keep is in newborn intensive care units. Here, doses of antibiotics in infants weighing less than five pounds can be in the order of tenths of millilitres. These are time-consuming and prone to error in a patient where there is not a lot of margin for error.

Medfusion infusion syringes help to eliminate errors in the delivery of medication. They are adaptable, easy to customize, flexible, safe and smart. The devices are able to deliver drugs at high, but controlled, pressures and deliver subcutaneously or directly beneath the surface of the central nervous system. This last property makes them ideal for delivering spinal anaesthesia for childbirth.

The ability to inject drugs subcutaneously offers the doctor or nurse almost infinite choice of injection site. This is very handy where multiple injections are required. There is a potential disadvantage in that edema, or swelling at the injection site, may inactivate certain drugs.

Various parameters can be changed to customize the use of these devices. Lipid resistance, formulation, needle-free or latex-free configurations are all possible. In the 3500, the software that comes with the machine has been specially designed to completely eliminate errors in dosage within programmable dosing limits. Pressure trend displays and rapid alarm response times are also fully integrated.

Medicating patients in the hospital setting using a Medfusion 3500 syringe pump is safer, cheaper and optimizes nursing time. They may be used in the research setting or in the hospital. They are particularly useful in obstetric anesthesia and in patient-controlled analgesia.
