Trifocal Lenses Solve Many Vision Problems

By Brandon Powers

As time goes on, numerous individuals notice age-related vision issues, which are usually completely normal. Some people become frightened when they notice such changes, but the latter are not typically indicative of a serious problem. When reading or driving become difficult, however, it often leads to frustration. Fortunately, individuals who need several different powers in one pair of glasses can invest in trifocal lenses.

In the 1780s, Benjamin Franklin invented the first bifocals. Before this invention, those who were afflicted with presbyopia, which is essentially being both nearsighted and farsighted, had to own several pairs of glasses, one for each condition. The first bifocals featured a line traveling the width of the lens. The top section was for distance vision, and the bottom for reading.

As individuals age into their 50s, presbyopia sometimes develops in such a way that it affects the intermediate vision, as well as distance and reading vision. With the help of a bifocal lens, the wearer can see far and near, but his or her arm's length vision remains blurry. In the 1940s, trifocals were invented, thus solving this problem.

Trifocals have a second lens segment that is placed over the near vision section in a long-distance lens. This technically gives the glass 3 different powers. For this reason, individuals have clear vision in 3 different fields.

There are two types of modern trifocals. These styles are referred to as flat top or executive. The latter features ribbon shaped segments with lines through the lens' width. Flat top models are unlined and feature round sections. Numerous consumers like to wear models that do not have the telltale bifocal line.

Today's technological advancements have made it possible to design a broad range of multifocal contact lenses as well. The advantage of such devices is that they offer the same three clarified fields of vision as conventional eyeglasses. Ultimately, anyone experiencing vision problems that come with age should consider discussing trifocal lenses with a qualified optometrist.
