Tips For Purchasing The Best Sunless Tanning Lotions

By Haywood Hunter

Like in other fields, having knowledge in the field of beauty is very important. To get the best self tanning lotions one must have some background knowledge about beauty products. Advertisements in the media are simply meant for winning the confidence of buyers. The chemical make-up of most lotions, creams, and other sunless tanners remains constant. This article discusses some of the major ingredients. After reading this article one should have the right information to be able to buy good products.

The first thing to do before making the payment is to observe the list of ingredients on a product one intends to buy. The list contains all substances in the lotion and their percentages. Most commonly, the ingredients will be bronzers, moisturizers, sun-screens, and tanners. Researching each component to understand what the product actually does before buying would be nice.

No matter what is said in the advertisements, active compounds in a majority of tanning commodities are erythulose and dihydroxyacetone, abbreviated as (DHA). Both DHA and erythulose are sugars which may be plant derivatives or products of industrial processing. The level of concentration of the 2 compounds in a product determines its ability to tan the skin. Producers provide varying levels of concentration to suit the varying skin types of consumers.

One should choose the concentration of DHA and erythulose depending on their skin complexion. Dark skinned people should choose high concentrations while light skinned people low concentrations. Too much DHA on light skin can cause a lot of tanning effect which may again look bad. Visiting a dermatologist for advice on skin type and the best concentrations of erythulose and DHA to use is highly advised.

DHA and erythulose work by reacting with amino acid in the epidermis to produce a brown-colored complex. This reaction is known as Maillard reaction. The brown complex that results does not last more than three to four days. The brown color fades away as dead cells slough off the body. The tan can however be maintained by reapplying the product after every four to ten days.

To get the best results from a tanning product, the application procedure is very important. The first application should be done heavily followed by lighter applications to maintain the tan. The skin should be cleaned properly before application. Products with erythulose alone cause a slower change in color as compared to those with DHA. Erythulose therefore provide a better option for people who need a gradual color change. Some manufacturers combine the two for a longer lasting tan.

Additional substances such as perfumes, moisturizers, bronzers, and anti-aging agents are very essential. Moisturizers keep a moisturized skin, accelerating the process of color change. Although bronzers get washed away by water, they darken the skin. Anti-aging additives keep the skin good-looking and young while perfumes emit a nice fragrance. Enzyme tyrosine is said to accelerate color change by stimulating excessive synthesis of melanin.

It may take some time before the desired effect is achieved. This should not cause one to change products often, because allergies and other skin reactions may result. Once a suitable product has been found it would be a good idea to stick to it for a while. Also, beware of expensive but ineffective products on the market.
