Why Orthodontics? It's All About The Bite!

By Rey Vetangelo

For years I passed up getting my teeth cleaned because my insurance provider didn't cover it. However, as the years have passed and my oral care routine hasn't changed, I find myself worrying more over cavities. There are several reasons that your doctor works with you to get your teeth cleaned at least yearly.

You might have thought that orthodontics was all about appearances, but it's really much more than that. Orthodontics can make your smile look better, but we want to get your teeth and jaws working well together. That comes down to one thing: your bite.

* Teeth cleanings will help prevent gum disease. Sometimes brushing alone cannot keep the plaque building up around your teeth from causing bacteria from ruling your mouth. Plaque is a toxin that irritates your gums and the rest of your mouth, it results in inflammation and gingivitis. Sever stages of gum disease result in actual decay and erosion of your gums - trust us that is a painful surgery to fix.

Each mouth is a little different as any Draper dentist can attest to. You are working against the different chemical make up unique to you. This will determine what type of toothbrush you need, what toothpaste you should use, and what bacteria is growing in your mouth. Understanding the bacteria will help you fight against it, for example, by avoiding certain foods.

* A bright smile is your best accessory. Every day wear and tear on your mouth causes staining. A lot of us use toothpaste with whitening properties to ensure we always have a bright smile. Going in for your regular cleaning will help to remove the build up and grime on your teeth revealing a beautiful smile. Remember to always brush and floss between cleanings to keep your smile nice and white.

* No body likes to talk with someone who has bad breath- cleaning your teeth can actually help prevent that. As you know, halitosis results from poor oral hygiene. Food and mucus coat the surface of your teeth and gums, unclean dentures, or throat infections can all assist with the foul smell of bad breath.

As with any part of your body, the health is directly impacted by your diet. The same is true for your teeth; a healthy diet results in a healthy smile. One of the most harmful substances is sugar - because of the reaction it causes in your mouth the enamel is weakened. Sodas are the same, causing damage that cannot be reversed. It is important to keep your teeth strong and healthy and a lot of that comes from taking in less sugar.

Lastly, we suggest checking with your company's insurance provided. If you are covered on any type of dental plan, chances are it covers at least one yearly cleaning. So make the most of the insurance money you are paying out - go to the dentist and have a preventative care, cleaning, and exam.

Make sure to consult with your dentist about any other care that should be taken to keep your smile in the best shape possible. Many different things can take place in your mouth, but make sure you have control. Keep a smile that is bright and clean for years to come.
